Description

Franklin D. Roosevelt & Lyndon B. Johnson: Great Coattail Jugate in Choice Condition. Highly-desirable 2.25" lithographed tin pinback featuring portraits of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Congressman Lyndon B. Johnson, inscribed "Me and Roosevelt For Johnson". The curl reads: "Supplied by J. Hugh Campbell, Dallas, Texas". Issued, we believe, for a 1941 Democratic primary election won by "Pappy" O'Daniel in a "squeaker". The loss was particularly devastating to Johnson, as the winner was a shoe-in for election come November in the heavily Democratic state. Johnson pinned his hopes on an aggressive campaign in which he relied heavily on the support of FDR whose image and comments favorable to Johnson were distributed widely on campaign paraphernalia. Voter fraud was suspected, but little could be done. Johnson turned the tables in 1948 with the help of "Ballot Box 13". Two buttons were produced in 1941... a 7/8" slogan pin and this large jugate. Examples normally exhibit extensive crazing or alligatoring of the "painted surface". This has very little of that characteristic and displays in near-mint condition... perfectly-centered with glossy surface and shiny back. It was recently found in a cigar-box of low-value buttons, probably untouched, having not seen the light of day since 1941.
