Description
Davis & Bryan: An Exceedingly Rare and Important 1¼" Jugate Pinback. For political button collectors there are three key jugates: Cox & Roosevelt, Roosevelt & Johnson, and Davis & Bryan. The only comparatively available Davis jugate is the ⅞" version by Bastian Bros., which customarily sells in the several thousand dollar range. Three different designs were made in 1¼", but all were probably produced only as samples, since fewer than a dozen examples in total have survived.For many years the variety offered here was considered the premier Davis & Bryan. However a single example of a new variety was uncovered around fifteen years ago. It was sold privately for a reported $150,000, and is now one of the signature items in the hobby's most extensive pinback button collection. A second copy surfaced on eBay, where it brought nearly $60,000. Both specimens are deeply embedded in collections that are unlikely to come to the market for many years, if ever. Accordingly, for all intents and purposes, the example offered here is to be considered the premier collectable Davis & Bryan jugate.
Until the late 1970s only one example was known, the Veleber Collection copy which had significant damage at 6:00. That specimen passed to Gary Smith, but disappeared- perhaps forever -when his fine collection was stolen. Since then two, possibly three more have surfaced, including the Berman collection example offered here.
It is in beautiful condition, and by any standard must be considered one of the top buttons in this collection. To our recollection, this is the only time this variety has appeared at auction, presenting what may be an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the advanced collector.
