Description
Cox & Roosevelt: The "Holy Grail" Jugate Button for These 1920 Running Mates. Pinback jugates were produced for every presidential ticket since 1860, and building a jugate set has always been a popular pursuit for collectors who could afford to do so. Of the celluloid buttons, which first appeared in 1896, the Cox & Roosevelt towers over all others as an iconic rarity. It has been estimated that perhaps 50-60 examples survive, an amazingly low number considering that six distinctly different designs were produced. The generally accepted explanation is that all were manufacturer's examples, and no design was ever produced in quantity. Cox was perceived as a sure loser against Warren Harding, and with the exception of a few common, nationally-distributed varieties, Cox buttons of any type range from scarce to rare. Undoubtedly the poor prospects for the Democratic candidate led to a paucity of funds for niceties such as campaign buttons. The variety offered here was made by the Whitehead & Hoag Co. of Newark, New Jersey-the leading producer of all types of pinback buttons from 1896 through the 1930s. It is the choice of many collectors seeking a representative Cox-Roosevelt jugate inasmuch as it is the only 7/8" design for which a Harding & Coolidge mate is obtainable (also offered in this auction).
The present example has some stains on the back paper, light rust on the collet and some fox marks on the curl which are not visible at all when viewed from the front, and are mentioned for accuracy only. The surface is glossy and has no visible defects, displaying in near-mint condition.
