Description
Bryan & Stevenson and McKinley & Roosevelt: The Iconic Jugate Eclipse 1 1/4" Button. This classic design was created in 1900, at the height of the "golden era" of colorful and inventive political button designs. One popular conception which appeared in several variations was based on the idea that one presidential candidate would "eclipse" the other on election day. All varieties are rare and sought after, but by far the most important style is the one offered here -- the only one showing both presidential candidates and their running mates, and in vibrant color. Fewer than ten examples are believed known. This one is choice and beautifully centered (for strictest accuracy we note a trivial small mark on Stevenson's right eye), probably all but unimprovable. Between 2006 and 2015 this design appeared in Heritage auctions four times (possibly including one or more repeat appearances), selling for an average of $18,900. One of the most prized buttons by the Pressmans, and justifiably so!From the collection of Sam and Jeff Pressman
