Description
Al Smith: Provocative and Sexy Slogan Button. In 1928, the battle over Prohibition pitted the "Wet's" versus the "Dry's". Smith and the Democrats favored the repeal of the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act. The more sober Republicans were "agin it." This 1 1/4" button with Torsch & Franz back paper has one of the greatest slogans ever conceived for a political button: "Vote for Al Smith and Make Your Wet Dreams Come True." There is a double-meaning behind this slogan and, if your mind is in the gutter, you know what we're talking about! The button is in mint condition and may be only one of two known in the hobby. We remember "way back" when our colleague Tom Slater produced a show (in conjunction with Foster Pollack, we believe) at the Holiday Inn on 57th Street in New York City. Tom coined the term "collectible" to be applied to the items that dealers were exhibiting. Few people recall Tom's signal achievement, but the credit belongs to him! The highlight of the show was the appearance of one of these buttons (perhaps the very one we are offering) which traded hands for around $100.Auction Info
