Description

President Lyndon B. Johnson: Grouping Including the Bill Signing Pen for Civil Rights Act 1564 and More. Originally belonging to Arnold "Pappy" Noel, former special assistant to President Gerald Ford and longtime news photographer, this collection ranges from press passes to the very fountain pen used by Lyndon B. Johnson to sign S. 1564. The pivotal Act ensured voting rights for African Americans, making the attendance of Martin Luther King Jr. and other Civil Rights leaders for the signing all the more important. The pen has a clear barrel with white text reading, "The President-The Whitehouse," with "Esterbrook" appearing on the nib. The pen measures 6.375" in length and 0.25" in width. It is accompanied by a typed slip of paper reading, "One of the pens used by the President, August 6, 1965, in signing S. 1564, An Act to enforce the fifteenth amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and for other purposes." Other items include Presidential Trip press passes; an American Revolution Bicentennial patch; ornamental pendants, tie clips, and cuff links bearing the Seal of the President of the United States; an invitation from the White House News Photographers Association and one from the Secretary of Public Information; an Air Force One name card; and more. In addition to these items is a 10.75" x 12.5" photo album documenting Noel's time in the White House during the 1970s. Not only full of articles, this album holds press passes, membership cards of the White House News Photographers Association, business cards, and more.

Arnold Noel, better known as "Pappy" (a WWII nickname) by the Washington Press corps, was a United Press International newsreel and still photographer. His prestigious work included coverage of the Civil Rights movement, the U.S. space program, and wars in Central America. In addition to serving as president of the White House Press Photographers Association for two years, Noel was known for his work in the Ford administration press office, which lasted 18 months.

Condition: The pen is in excellent condition, with a few dark marks on the nib. Expected wear throughout the grouping, with some light scattered toning to paper items. Album contents look to be secured by adhesive pages.
