Description
James Buchanan: Silver Japanese Embassy Medal. As a follow-up to Commodore Matthew Perry's successful visit to Japan in 1853-1854, the Japanese reciprocated in 1860, sailing to America. Their legation arrived in Washington on May 14th, and returned on June 30th. In between, they met with President Buchanan at the White House to be accredited and present their diplomatic credentials, and were feted in San Francisco, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. At their last audience with the President on June 5th, three gold commemorative medals were given to the ambassadors, and either five or twenty (sources vary) silver medals and fifty bronze medals for distribution among their suite. In addition, three silver medals were given to naval officers DuPont, Lee and Porter for performing "... arduous and responsible duties... with consummate tact and discretion..." Originals of this medal were engraved by Salathiel Ellis. A damaged die necessitated a new obverse by U.S. Mint engraver Paquet which are so marked. We offer an original strike, silver example of "The First Japanese Embassy" medal, with first obverse by Ellis, Julian CM-22. It measures a substantial 76 mm. in diameter. It has prooflike surfaces with light wear on the high points. There are numerous very tiny rim tics as well as a more prominent dent on the reverse rim at 10:00. The fields are hairlined on both sides and there is a small dig in the obverse field opposite Buchanan's forehead. The word "embassy" in the context of this medal does not mean a physical building. Rather it means "a mission to foreign government headed by an ambassador." We sold a cleaned example in our last sale for $8,365.Auction Info
