Description
George Washington: A Unique Military Saber Honoring the First President, Circa 1800-1810. Its distinctive style identifies it as being of French manufacture. Most military swords used in this era were made in Europe and imported. This form was made until approximately 1820, but the crisscross pattern on the grip narrows the dating to the first decade of the 19th century. The languet on one side carries a high relief profile of Washington surrounded by a wreath, with a star above and a large "W' below. Our militaria specialist has never encountered another example decorated with Washington's image. It was probably used by a militia officer, and the comparatively short 34.5" blade length suggests an officer of artillery. The steel blade is deeply etched with a fine federal eagle and the motto E Pluribus Unum, as well as draped flags and cannon, a liberty cap on pole, and the blazing sun. On the other side of the blade are etched similar devices and the words "Honor and my Country". Overall display appearance is excellent, but the sword shows clear evidence of long use, including a number of small v-shaped indentations on the cutting edge of the blade suggesting perhaps contact with opponents' swords in battle. The brass scabbard is original, includes the suspension loops, and displays various indentations consistent with its years of use. A wonderful and early commemorative item honoring the father of our country. From the Edward C. Gillette Collection.
