Description

Abraham Lincoln: Large Format 1858 Photograph of Abraham Lincoln. This sepia-toned photograph is either an albumen or salt print and is attributed to Roderick Cole. It was taken in Peoria, Illinois, in 1858, during the time of the celebrated Lincoln-Douglas debates. The portrait proved quite popular and saw extensive use in the presidential election of 1860, appearing on ferrotype campaign badges, ribbons, and cartoons. The Ostendorf Collection contained an example personally signed by Lincoln as well as a cased ambrotype copy image. Our example was likely produced prior to Lincoln's election to the presidency. It is double matted and framed and appears to be in excellent condition. The visible dimensions are 5" x 6.75". It has deep, resonant tones and depicts Lincoln at three-quarter length, wearing a satin vest, below a gathered curtain and tassel (the latter a standard design element often seen in lithographic portraits of popular politicians).
