Description
Abraham Lincoln: William M. Evarts Archive from Lincoln's Washington, D.C. Funeral. Exciting group of artifacts owned by William M. Evarts (1818-1901), used at the time of Lincoln's first funeral service in the nation's capital. Evarts was a talented attorney who served as Attorney General, Secretary of State and U.S. Senator from New York. He nominated William H. Seward at the Wigwam Convention of 1860 and moved that Lincoln's nomination be made unanimous. The items descended in the Evarts Family and were sold by his great-granddaughter in 1998, as attested to by a signed Letter of Provenance that accompanies the lot. The archive includes: 1) 5" x 3.25" thick paper ticket with mourning borders, inscribed "North. Admit the Bearer to the Executive Mansion, On Wednesday, the 19th of April, 1865." 2) 5.75" x 9.25" bifolium program for the Washington funeral, titled "Order of the Procession." 3) Vintage pasteboard "Almond Shaving Cream" box containing two dried corsages (one with red, white and blue flag ribbon attached and the other with a crepe mourning rosette attached), worn by Mr. & Mrs. Evarts at the funeral. 4) Pair of post-war CDVs of Evarts by Rockwood and Mora.Auction Info
