Description

Abraham Lincoln: Blood-Stained Bed Sheet. Tapering strip of linen, approximately 8" x .5" with scattered blood stains. It was excised from a larger 7" x 8" piece of bedding that was acquired shortly after the assassination by Charles K. Tuckerman, First U.S. Minister to Greece 1869-1872. It was included in his papers, attached to a sheet of paper with the notation: "Relic from the Deathbed of Abraham Lincoln, Stained with his Blood, Taken from His Death Chamber, C.K.T." This fragment was removed from the larger size prior to its sale in the May 23, 2001 "Rail Splitter" auction. The larger piece was subsequently cut up and "piecemealed out". Accordingly, this may be the largest piece from the original still extant. It comes with an LOA dated August 21, 2001 signed by Jonathan Mann of "The Rail Splitter." Accompanying documents indicate it was sold by Mary Benjamin to Norm Flayderman back in 1961. From The Collection of Dr. Blaine Houmes
