Description

[Abraham Lincoln]: An Evocative Bloodstained Piece of Bandage Which Bound the Dying President's Wounds.
This 2" x .08" swatch was cut from a larger piece from the renowned collection of Dr. Gerald McMurtry, and matches a piece found in the collection of the Chicago Historical Society. McMurtry authored books on Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, and played a notable role in assembling the phenomenal Lincoln Collection of the Lincoln Life Insurance Co. in Ft. Wayne, IN.
The piece of bandage from which the present example was cut was part of a group of McMurtry's Lincoln artifacts sold by Skinner's Auction house in early 2000. It is accompanied by several pieces of documentation pictures on our website, as well as a video of the present owner shipping this piece from the larger McMurtry one.
The bloodstains are faint and better viewed under ultra-violet light. Some may find it morbid but we see it as an intensely personal memento of the martyred president.
