Description

James Monroe: Extremely Rare and Sought-After Portrait Mug with His Name Spelled "Munroe".
Certainly one of the most iconic of early three-dimensional political/ presidential items. A charming patriotic eagle transfer graces each side. A matching version for John Quincy Adams is also known, suggesting that this cup may date from the transitional period in 1825 when Adams had been elected to succeed Monroe. Heritage was privileged to handle two other examples in 2004 and 2009 which sold for $21,846 and $14,340 respectively. Height 2.625", diameter 2.875". Faint spots of discoloration in the bottom and to the left of one eagle; otherwise, choice condition with no repairs or restoration. An important opportunity for the serious collector of early political display items. Pictured in Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s Running for President: The Candidates and Their Images, volume 1, page 78.
