Description

Thomas Jefferson: Presidential Folding Fan Dated 1801. French-made folding tan that measures 16.25" when fully extended. It features a 2.5" x 4" oval color portrait of Jefferson with French title that translates to: "Thomas Jefferson President of the United States in 1801". The portrait is surrounded by silver sequins. A line of sequins is also sewn across the top border on the front side. The body of the fan is copper-colored parchment paper with gold paper trim applied at top. The back side is blank. No doubt made for export to the American market at the time of Jefferson's inauguration. It comes with the original pasteboard wallpaper-covered box. Arriving in Paris in August 1784, Jefferson served as United States Minister to France for five years, until 1789. His connection to France was deep, heartfelt and mutually-felt. Their revolution in 1789 drew inspiration from the American Revolution. This fan ranks as one of the premier 3-D presidential items from our early history. There are only a handful of examples known and this is the only one that retains the original box.

Condition: Missing four sequins along the top. Split to one strut, second from the right. Split to end strut on left. Small loss to parchment paper bottom left side with short split to a nearby fold.
