Description

Abraham Lincoln: Gideon Welles' 1865 Inauguration Ticket. 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" engraved card inscribed: "1865. Inauguration Day, March 4. Admit the Bearer." It is signed by the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate, George T. Brown. Someone has also written "Floor" in red ink. We believe this is a seating ticket for the floor of the Senate. It comes with the original transmittal envelope addressed to the "Secy. of the Navy." Tape residue on the verso of both from previous mounting. Some bleed-through on the ticket. We have seen only 2 or 3 other examples. Ex: Estate of Gideon Welles.
