Description

Abraham Lincoln: 1861 Inauguration Ball Invitation. 10" x 9" engraved invitation on card stock for the "Union Ball 1861." This took place following Lincoln's inauguration on March 4, 1861. Given the secession crisis and the looming Civil War, it was decided to rename the inauguration ball as the "Union Ball". The names of the invitees ("The Misses Cohen's") are completed in ink. Printed by Philp & Solomons Metropolitan Book Store. Five future members of the Lincoln Cabinet are listed as managers, plus Winfield Scott and Stephen Douglas. Lincoln served as a manager for the Zachary Taylor inauguration ball in 1849. Superb condition. Possibly the finest example known.
