More Information: In 1878 Auguste Brichaut of Brussels, Belgium designed a series of Presidential medlets from Washington to Hayes. Listed in Sullivan as MVB-B, 30mm, the obverse of each had 24 stars with the name of the President in the center and the year of his inauguration. Each had a common reverse of a displayed eagle and were signed "BRICHAUT DIR." below. There are a total of 16 of the Brichaut design in assorted combination of brass and copper metal. There is a duplicate of Van Buren with one in brass, the other in copper. Another group of medals listed as MVB-A, 36mm, are attributed to a series by George Lovett published in 1860-1861. After the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 Lovett produced this group of medals depicting the first sixteen presidents of the United States on the obverse and their homes on the reverse side. The Lovett medals feature a nearly complete run of the 16 presidents in copper, missing only the Polk, Van Buren has a duplicate. Similarly, an almost complete run of 16 presidents in white metal missing only Lincoln for a total of 32 medals. Lastly is an unusual Madison-Jackson example that features President Madison on the obverse muled with the residence of Andrew Jackson on the verso. The remaining four tokens in the group MVB-C, 26mm, are in copper, brass, and two in white metal with different reverse designs by William H. Key of Philadelphia in 1862.
