Description

Franklin D. Roosevelt: 1940 Naval Buildup Bill Signing Pen. Framed shadow-box display that includes a July 24, 1940 TLS of FDR accompanied by a bill signing pen for "H.R. 10100, An Act to establish the composition of the United States Navy, to authorize the construction of certain naval vessels, and for other purposes." The letter, written from Hyde Park on 7" x 9" White House stationery, was sent to Captain Joseph M. Patterson in New York. During the election of 1940, FDR promised not to send American troops into the European war, but did all he could to bolster U.S. defense capabilities, most notably the Lend Lease Program that kept England afloat. Some toning to letter, not examined out of frame.
