Description
Proof of Ownership Document for Former U.S.C.T. Solider. One partially printed page, 8.5" x 14", Worcester County, Maryland; April 10, 1865. A document from the Justice of the Peace in Worcester County, Maryland, recognizing that "before me...appeared Geo. W. Covington Executor of Amelia Covington...says that he as executor was the owner of Robert Covington (a man of African descent) at the time of his enlistment; that he enlisted...in the 9th Regiment United States Colored Troops, Co. G, as set forth in the annexed Certificate of the Board of Claims." The document is signed by George Covington, the Justice of the Peace, a clerk, and two witnesses. Docketed on verso. There are only a handful of these known.Condition: Professional repair along smoothed folds with Japanese tissue. Light soiling at upper left corner that does not touch text. Offsetting from being stored against another document.
