Description

Calvin Coolidge: The Iconic "Our Pilot...Keep Him at the Helm" 1 ¼-inch Button. Having served most of the late Warren G. Harding's term, Coolidge was running in his own right in 1924. Some great button designs were produced for his candidacy, but this one showing Coolidge and the center of a ship's wheel is perhaps the most memorable. It is also perhaps the rarest, and this variety has been at the top of the want lists of some of the hobby's most sophisticated celluloid collectors for many years. It had been our impression that this was the only known example. But as will sometimes happen, once our offering was publicized a second example surfaced. Nonetheless this remains a "Holy Grail" button for serious collectors of 1920s celluloids.

On the back is the 1924-date paper of an obscure vendor, Freligh & Enquist of St. Paul, Minnesota. Both front and back are in superb condition on this "once in a lifetime" button opportunity. Intended buyers should be prepared to "fasten their seat belts" and get ready for a bidding adventure! From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
