Description

American Flag: A Marvelous Miniature 28 Stars Silk Flag. Meticulously hand-sewn stripes and stars in an unusual "snowflake" style. The consignor purchased this flag from an antiques shop in the Buffalo area some years ago. He was told that it had been made for the Fourth of July, 1845, to celebrate the entry of Texas into the Union. It was sewn onto the back of a military jacket (probably a militiaman's coat), where it remained until it was removed for display in the early to mid 20th century.

The antique shop proprietor allowed the consigner to call the previous owner, an elderly woman, through whose family the flag had descended, and she corroborated this account. Unfortunately, the buyer did not ask that this be put in writing at the time. However, the consignor's own handwritten account accompanies the piece. Regardless of its precise origins, this is clearly a marvelous little "period" flag, and a gem for any serious flag collector. Other than some trivial light soiling, the condition is excellent. The original tiny holes can be seen around the perimeter where it was presumably sewn to the coat. 5.25" x 4.25", in a vintage 9" x 8" frame.
