Description

Abraham Lincoln: 1860 Currier & Ives Cartoon. Anti-Lincoln 13" x 17.5" medium folio lithograph by Currier & Ives, titled "The Great Exhibition of 1860." It depicts newspaper editors Horace Greeley, Henry Raymond and James Gordon Bennett, as well as William Seward and Lincoln riding the split rail hobby horse with a padlock on his lips, dancing to the tune played by Greeley on his portable organ. The cartoon is decidedly racist and partisan in nature. Defeated front-runner Seward holds a black infant and exclaims: "It's no use, trying to keep me and the 'Irrepressible' infant in the background, for we are really the head and front of the party." 1.5" border tear at top, repaired on verso with scotch tape (faint discoloration), ink stains to extreme right, faint sunning, overall a very fine example.
