Description

Zachary Taylor: Papier-Mâché Stogie Case. 2 3/4" x 5" papier-mâché stogie case with transfer portrait of the 1848 Whig Presidential candidate, hand-colored, inscribed "Old Rough and Ready. The Hero of the War with Mexico. Genl. Zachs. Taylor". An eagle and shield appear at top. The same portrait and slogan appears on snuff boxes, but this is the first stogie case we have seen with that design. Most stogie cases with Taylor are Mexican War themed. This example, perhaps unique, has the front, the back and the embossed leather insert. It lacks the folded leather "wings" that hold the covers together. Still, it has the "essentials" and displays beautifully!
