Description

Washington, Adams, and Jefferson: Great Liverpool Pitcher picturing the three Revolutionary War leaders who would become the Nation's first three presidents. This transfer clearly originated during the early 1790s; the three men join together to hoist a pole with "Liberty" cap that was emblematic of the French Revolution. "Union to the People" above, "Civil and Religious Liberty to All Mankind" below. As is often found with this type of early pottery, a large crack starting at the original handle runs to the transfer on the front. We note also that the spout has been repaired. With minimal scratching to the transfer the scenes on both sides appear very bold against the cream color of the background. From the U. I. "Chick" and Cecilia Harris Collection.
