Description

U.S. House of Representatives: Circa 1857 Congressional Chair. The chair was used in Congress from 1857 to 1873. They were designed by Thomas U. Walter, the architect of the Capitol. His renovations culminated in the enlarged dome surmounted by a statue of a Native American princess, emblematic of Liberty. Chairs and desks were ordered as part of an 1857 renovation of the House, overseen by Montgomery C. Meigs. There were 241 Congressmen at that time. When 11 states seceded from the Union, the number of members were reduced to 175. Excess furniture was then distributed to other government buildings and sold to the public. The desk was manufactured by Doe & Hazelton of Boston while the chairs were made by Bembe & Kimble located at 20 Broadway in Manhattan. The chair has its original brass castors and more than likely the orignal leather. The chair measures 40" tall, and 22" wide. Along with the chair is an albumen photograph of Congressman William B. Allison of Iowa, who served in the House of Representatives from 1863-1871. The image measures 11" x 13" overall framed. The mount has an image of the Capitol building above the photograph, and was likely taken at Mathew Brady's Washington, DC studio, sitting in the style of chair being offered. This chair comes from the home of Congressman John Hill, who served the 4th District from New Jersey from 1867-1873. A 5" x 8" photograph of Hill's home is included with the chair. On the verso in period ink it reads "Mrs. Hill (Cousin Pheobe) on porch". Also included is a copy image of President Lincoln, who sat for Brady in the same style chair.

Condition: Leather seat has wear and loss, as does the leather on the arm rests. The back pad is in fine condition, as is the wood frame. Photograph has mount loss.
