Ulysses S. Grant: Addie Ballou Oil on Canvas of Grant's Three Sons. 32" x 42" oil on canvas depicting three young boys, one of whom wears a Union soldier-style jacket. It is signed in red: "Addie L. Ballou 1881". Ballou (1837-1916) was a suffragette, poet, author and artist who worked out of a California studio. The Union jacket was a clue that prompted the consignor to do additional research. Based on comparison with photographs and prints and, figuring out the apparent age differential of the three boys, he concluded that they are the three sons of Ulysses S. Grant (Frederick Dent Grant, Ulysses S. Grant, Jr. and Jesse Root Grant). Grant also had a daughter, Nellie. Grant and his family were in the public eye from 1862 until 1885. Many printmakers, notably William Sartain, produced engravings and lithographs showing the Grant Family. In one example, a small folio issued in 1866, the three boys bear very close resemblances to the three in the painting. Ballou, like all artists, had access to these prints and likely did this portrait as an historical subject, depicting the boys not as they were in 1881, but as they were at the close of the Civil War, the time of Grant's greatest triumph. It is housed in an ornate 45" x 55" Victorian frame with sand-covered gold spandrel or liner. The painting was recently cleaned. It has not been relined. There are some scattered pinpoint areas of paint loss, mostly in the uniforms, along with some minor abrasion or loss at the very bottom. Requires third party shipping.
