    Description
John Quincy Adams: White House China. This fine porcelain custard cup is attributed to John Quincy Adams. The design matches that used on a service purchased by the Adames during their extensive diplomatic service in Europe. It was likely manufactured in the 1800-1825 period by the La Courtille Factory in Paris. The cup measures 3.25" high and is adhered to an oval base that measures 4.75" x 6.25". It is beautifully decorated with pairs of griffins, or possibly seahorses, and alternating shells. It is extensively gilded in the French manner. The colors employed are pink, gold, blue, yellow and burnt orange. The Adames were not socially active while residents of the White House and used the five services left behind by President Monroe for state dinners. They did make three separate purchases of china while in office. Although not listed in Klapthor's book on White House china, this cup was likely part of the White House china service used by Adams and retained by him after leaving office. It is in excellent condition save for a minor chip or blister on the white background of the top of the base.Auction Info
