Description

James Monroe: An Exceedingly Rare Ceramic Dinner Plate Depicting Him as President. In the center, surrounded by a circle of gold leaf, is a fine portrait, with name above and "President of the United States" below. Only a handful of display items are known for this important early president. More familiar are the small ceramic mugs with no portrait, but with the name misspelled "Munroe" on the side. An example of this mug fetched $9,560 in the March 2008 Gillette Collection auction, while a second example having significant restoration brought $7,500 in the August 2008 American Political Items Collectors National Convention auction conducted by Heritage. In April 2004, Heritage also sold another variety of small mug bearing a generic portrait of Monroe, with name below, for $21,846.55. This rare plate is in beautiful condition, with the slightest amount of trivial surface wear noted for accuracy. Diameter 9.25". A tremendous opportunity for the serious collector of early political and presidential display items. From the Edward C. Gillette Collection.
