James Madison: Rare White House Dinner Plate....
Description
James Madison: Rare White House Dinner Plate. Measuring 9", this dinner plate was part of the Madison service while Madison served as Secretary of State. Originally ordered in 1806 with the other like-designed French porcelain in the collection. The reverse has the maker's mark of "Nast à Paris".When the British burned down the White House in 1814, the fire also claimed the inherited china from the Adams and Jefferson administrations. Post fire, the Madisons were forced to relocate to the Octagon House, where they resided until after the end of the War of 1812, using their personal china.
This collection would be categorized as the "state china" during the remainder of the Madison administration. Of the 231 original pieces purchased in 1806, about 30 are rumored to still exist, remaining primarily in the White House, Smithsonian Institution, and other smaller museum collections.
