Description

James Madison: Liverpool Portrait Jug. Some folks call this a jug... others call it a pitcher. Whatever! It was produced in Liverpool, England and exported to the United States during the administration of James Madison (likely his first term, prior to that unpleasantness known as the War of 1812). It measures 7 3/4" tall. There are three transfers: "Peace, Plenty and Independence" design with goddesses and eagle, the Great Seal of the United States under the spout, and "James Maddison [sic] President of the United States of America". The portrait was first used for jugs where it was identified as Jefferson. Here, they recycled the portrait and changed the name to Madison. The condition is excellent save for an internal 1.5" crack adjacent to the base of the handle.
