Description

James Madison: Imposing, Large Early Chalk Statue. Holding a document, presumably the Constitution, which he co-authored, in his hand. "Madison" in raised letters on front of base. Obviously, a piece of considerable age with variegated surface patina. Expert opinion consulted by the consignor advised that it is certainly 19th century, and could well date from Madison's lifetime, as these chalk figurines represent an early form of American commercial sculpture. Excellent condition, with powerful display presence. Height 23.5".
