Description

James K. Polk: Wonderful Whalebone Campaign Cane. We suspect this item was carried by an ardent Democrat from New Bedford, Massachusetts. It is a hand-carved, 33" whalebone cane. It has an 1.25" brass metal tip with pinprick, floral designs. The middle section tapers to an eight-sided "grip" bordered by circular turnings. As we travel up the cane, we notice two inlaid, brass eagles. The knob handle contains a 7/8" gilt brass Polk campaign shell under glass, held in place by a Florentine retaining ring. The shell has a raised bust of Polk facing left and reads: "James K. Polk Friend of Equal Rights." This is in the top echelon of campaign canes and a premier Polk item.
