Description

Henry Clay: Folk Art Racoon Campaign Cane. 35" hand-carved hard wood cane made in support of Henry Clay when he ran for the third and last time for President in 1844. The handle or knob is a three-dimensional head of Clay in the round. Just below that, on the slightly tapered shaft, the artist has carved a sprawling racoon, symbol or mascot of the Whig party. Lacks metal tip. Some age cracks, more pronounced in the bottom half, but very solid. We can't recall ever seeing any campaign canes for Clay, although we are aware of examples for Jackson, Harrison, Van Buren and Polk.
