Description

Grover and Frances Cleveland: Mechanical Fishing Diorama Toy. 17.5" x 14" x 5" mechanical toy housed in deep shadow box frame, made to stand upright. It depicts the President and First Lady on a fishing trip (Grover Cleveland was a noted angler who was a published author on the subject). It is made of lithographed paper, cardboard, metal and thread. The heads, arms and fishing rods are designed to move. The President is drawing a lot of flies and appears nonplussed at his lack of success. The First Lady, smiling pleasantly, is landing fish like a pro. The back panel (with instruction label pasted on) slides out, revealing the clockwork mechanism, weights and counterweights. This lot comes with a modern replacement key, and once wound, works like a charm. A fish in the corner of the frame pops out to laugh at the President's lack of success. Some loss to decorative paper trim on the sides. The central panel has a vertical split, possibly as made, or a result of warpage. Overall condition is quite nice. There are only a handful of examples known.
