Description

Grant & Colfax: Impressive Shadow-Box Jugate Display. This is certainly one of the best display pieces issued for the 1868 campaign. Copper three-dimensional busts of Washington, Lincoln, Grant and Colfax are mounted on velvet ground, within plain brass frames. This all against an oval silvered copper plate elaborately engraved with designs and campaign slogans. The piece was copyrighted and produced by R. H. Norris of Paterson, New Jersey. It appears to have been produced during the presidential campaign, even though it confidently states "Elected 1868 Novr. 3rd". The oval engraved plaque measures 9" x 11" and is recessed within a mahogany liner or spandrel with gold stamped designs. The original frame is 16" x 18". Some verdigris on the busts and wear to the silvered finish to the left of the eagle. Fine condition overall.
