George Washington: Portrait Dated 1791 After Gilbert Stuart. 27 3/8" x 23 5/8" oil on canvas depicting George Washington, apparently copied from a work by Gilbert Stuart that now hangs in the White House. The painting was recently treated by Julius Lowy Frame & Restoring Company in New York. A copy of their report can be emailed to interested parties. We also have images of the back side of the painting prior to re-lining, where the date "1791" is clearly visible. The restorer removed surface dirt, old layers of varnish and filled in areas of loss. The painting is housed in a new wood frame measuring 29 1/2" x 33". A fine craquelure is apparent over the surface of the work. Portraits dating from Washington's presidency are few-and-far between, especially works of this quality.Auction Info
