Description
George Washington: Oil on Board After John Trumbull. 16.5" x 20.25" [sight] oil on board, framed to an overall size of 24" x 28". It is signed "John Trumbull 1797" in the lower left corner, but is not the actual work of Trumbull, but inspired by Trumbull's "Death of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton, January 3, 1777." That work was produced between the mid-1780s and 1831, during which time a series of sketches were made. One of these sketches, or an unfinished version owned by the Yale University Art Gallery, may have served as a model for this work. Washington is shown on horseback directing his troops forward, including the placement of field pieces. The viewer's attention is focused on Washington, the only figure whose facial figures are recognizable and detailed. The faces of the other soldiers are indistinct, purposely. Puffs of brown smoke and the awkward stance of the horses adds to the overall sense of the din of battle and fog-of-war. It has an even coat of varnish. The provenance includes the Collection of May Atherton Leach, the Collection of the Philadelphia History Museum at Atwater Kent and Christie's New York, September 29, 2010, lot 80.Auction Info
