Description

George Washington: Extraordinary Snuff Box Lid. This has to be one of the best Washington pieces out there. Made during Washington's Presidency, it is a hand-painted papier-mâché snuff box lid. It measures 6" x 3" and has been mounted on a velvet background and placed in a frame without glazing. The central emblem is inscribed "God Save The President Washington". Above it is the Great Seal of the United States and the word "Independence". An angel on the left blows the trumpet of Fame and holds the victor's laurel wreath. The Goddess of War, representing Washington's victories on the battlefield of the Revolution, appears on the right. Outside of some minor rim chipping, it is in excellent condition. The provenance includes noted military antiquarian Bill Guthman. The slogan is a reflection of America's former status as a colony under the rule of King George III.
