Description

George Washington: A Very Rare Creamware Mug with Uncommon Equestrian Portrait. Manufactured in and around Liverpool, England, this creamware with American motifs was widely exported to the U.S. from the 1780s until the war of 1812 shut down the trade. The overwhelming majority were large pitchers, with bowls the next most common form. Much scarcer are these mugs with handles. The more typically seen version carries a profile portrait of Washington, but the present example features him on horseback, with "George Washington, Esqr. / General and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in America" below. Excellent condition on this very special Washington display item. Height 4.75". From the Edward C. Gillette Collection.
