Description

George Washington: A Superb, Large, Signed Oil on Canvas Portrait by Philadelphia Artist Robert Street (1796-1865). The painting's ownership can be traced back as far as Charles Stuckert, a prominent Alllentown, Pennsylvania architect, who is believed to have acquired it in the mid-19th century. It has since been passed down to the eldest member in each of four generations of descendants until it was bequeathed to the present consignor. Portraits of Charles Stuckert and his wife, which also descended in the family, are shown for reference purposes on our web site presentation of this lot. A letter from the consignor detailing the provenance of the Washington portrait will be provided to the purchaser.

Robert Street, born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, first came to prominence in the Philadelphia area around 1815. In 1824, he mounted a major exhibition in Washington, D.C. which included a notable portrait of Andrew Jackson; however, it is unknown whether his portrait of Washington was part of that exhibition. He also held a significant exhibition of some 200 of his works at the Artists' Fund Hall in Philadelphia in 1840. Interestingly, four of his children, by three different wives, also became artists.

This Washington portrait was featured in an important show of "American Portraits in California Collections" at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 1966 (item #32 in the catalog). It measures 21" x 25", elegantly presented in a vintage frame measuring 30" x 35". Signed "C. l.: R Street" and dated by the museum as circa 1812-1825. It is in beautiful condition with only a little trivial retouching on the bridge of the nose. Although painted in the manner of Gilbert Stuart, the portrait is in a unique, distinctive style and, seen in person, exudes a quality which might best be described as luminous. It is certainly one of the finest portraits of this Founding Father which it has been our privilege to present for auction.
