Description
George B. McClellan: Collapsible Paper Parade Lantern. 8.5" x 8.5" x 8.5" four-sided paper lantern. One side has a portrait of McClellan. The other three sides have campaign slogans: "Our Home and Fireside," "March 4th Abe Marches Forth," and "No Retreat in this Campaign." Original wire bail handle with single candle holder affixed to the interior base. These are among the most ephemeral of campaign artifacts. Including this example, we are aware of four known specimens, two with portraits and two with slogans only. For some reason, none have surfaced for Lincoln. Some closed tears. Due to condition issues, this example was sent out for professional restoration. It was disassembled, the paper panel backed with rice paper for stability, reassembled, then crumpled tissue paper placed inside for support. It displays beautifully.Auction Info
