Description
Franklin D. Roosevelt: Official White House China. The Great Seal of the United States is featured as the central design element on this 11 1/4" dinner plate from the FDR White House service. The outer edge has a circle of gold stars, the edges are trimmed in gold and the border is a lovely shade of pale yellow. It was part of a service produced by Thomas Haviland and Lenox displayed at the New York World's Fair in 1939-1940. Having served its purpose, it was considered surplus and delivered to the White House on November 1, 1940 at no cost. According to Margaret Klapthor in "Official White House China", the dinner plates and after-dinner cups and saucers were made by Lenox. The balance of the service was made by Haviland. The back of this plate has the Lenox logo and applied gold numbers (1326/P362A). It was recently acquired at the Indiana estate sale of Claude Wickard, Secretary of Agriculture in the Roosevelt cabinet from 1940-1945. Wickard succeeded Henry Wallace, elected as Vice President in 1940. The sale included many pieces of presidential memorabilia, including fully signed group photos of the Cabinet and limited edition books signed by FDR and presented as Christmas gifts to Cabinet members. This dinner plate is pictured on page 86 of the Klapthor book. The FDR Library at Hyde Park owns twelve various pieces from this service. We can locate no auction records for this piece which is in pristine condition and very lovely indeed..Auction Info
