Description
Andrew Jackson: Historically Important Patinated Zinc Equestrian Statue. A large and very rare bronze patinated zinc statue by American sculptor Clark Mills (September 1, 1815 - January 12, 1883). Measuring 23.5" tall, 19.5" long, and 5" wide on a stone-shaped base. The figure depicts Andrew Jackson reining in his rearing horse. The statue has a brass plaque attributing the work to the Philadelphia foundry of Cornelius and Baker. It is prominently marked, "Patented May 15, 1855" on one side of the base. The statue is modeled after the 1853 original monument located in Washington D.C. This monument was the first equestrian statue erected in the United States, as well as the first major bronze cast. An estimated crowd of over 20,000 people came to see the unveiling in Washington D.C.'s Lafayette Square on January 8, 1853, Senator Stephen A. Douglas addressed the crowd and Mills pulled himself up dangling from the forelegs of the statue to demonstrate the sturdiness of his design! A second statue was placed in Jackson Square in New Orleans in 1856, and a third in Nashville in 1880. The unveiling of the statue in New Orleans took place amidst great celebration; the famous statue still greets visitors to Jackson Square and is one of New Orleans's most enduring and iconic landmarks.Mills, who had never personally seen Jackson, probably gained his inspiration for the dramatic statue from prints depicting Old Hickory on horseback with military hat in hand waving his troops forward in the historic Battle of New Orleans. The design of the statue was revolutionary for its time since the only portions of the sculpture to touch the ground were the horse's hind feet. Clark Mills commissioned an estimated two dozen of these smaller statuettes intended as personal gifts to his friends. These elusive statues rarely come to market, in 2008 an example sold for $27,025.
This smaller Jackson sculpture was the company's most successful. Examples of these Cornelius and Baker Jackson sculptures are in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., the Tennessee State Museum, the Morris Museum in Georgia, the Virginia Museum of Art in Richmond, the New York Historical Society, the Andrew Jackson Historical Park Museum in South Carolina, and The White House.
Condition: The statue is entirely complete and original with all its fragile ornamental details preserved and intact, creating a highly dramatic and realistic presentation that is simply amazing to behold! The finish is moderately weathered. There is no evidence of any attempt to clean the surface thus the appearance has a somewhat dulled patina. A small pinhole, clearly made during manufacture to perhaps cool the casting is apparent on the upper tail of the horse. The statue weighs 30 pounds and will require special shipping arrangements.
