Andrew Jackson: High Quality Carved Head Hickory Cane. 35 1/2" hickory twigspur cane with carved 2 1/2" bust of Andrew Jackson in military uniform mounted as the knob or handle. The bust is very well-executed, but unsigned. Jackson was known as "Old Hickory" and souvenir canes made of hickory from his Hermitage retreat were popular keepsakes up until the time of his death in 1845. Given the youthful, military bust, we feel this was issued in the 1824-1832 period when Jackson was actively campaigning for the presidency. There is a natural, vertical age crack on one side and two areas of dark orange discoloration on the back of the bust. There is also a small chip on the tip of the nose. It retains its original 3" metal tip or copper ferrule. Six of the spurs have been planed down and ornamented with inlaid bone (or other natural substance) discs.Auction Info
