Allen Granbury Thurman (1813-1895) was a U.S. politician and jurist. He served as: a member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio (1845-1857); a Justice in the Ohio Supreme Court (1851-1856); a member of the United States Senate (1869-1881, President Pro Tem 1879-1880); a favorite son candidate in the Democratic presidential nominating conventions in 1876, 1880, and 1884; and Grover Cleveland's Vice Presidential running mate in 1888.

This portrait was painted in 1872, while Thurman was a senator, for the Ohio State Library. It was later exhibited in Washington's Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1905 as "The Thinker."

Condition:
Exhibits craquelure throughout with a hole in the upper center that has been patched. Otherwise, very good condition.
