Description

Abraham Lincoln: White House China Dinner Soup Bowl. 9 1/4" soup bowl in the Solferino pattern, as used in the Lincoln White House. These were ordered by Mrs. Lincoln from E. V. Haughwout & Company of New York during her May 1861 buying trip. The service was reordered by Presidents Johnson, Grant, and Arthur. The Grant and Arthur sets were decorated in France by Haviland & Company and are so marked. The pieces used during the Lincoln administration and the Johnson reorder were not marked, matching this one. An example of a soup plate is not pictured in Klapthor's standard reference book "Official White House China.", however, the design matches the dinner plate shown as illustration #28 in this reference. Please see an example of the matching dinner plate from this service, also appearing in this sale.

Condition: An extreme rarity in superb original condition!
