Description

Abraham Lincoln: Oil on Canvas Attributed to George Henry Story. From the gorgeous colors to the stately appearance of Abraham Lincoln, this portrait by George Henry Story is truly beautiful. The sight size measures 17.25" x 19.25", with the attractive gold-colored frame measuring a total size of 24.25" x 26.25". The signature "G.H. Story" appears in the lower right corner.

Born in January of 1835, George Henry Story was fifteen when he began an apprenticeship with a woodcarver. After several years studying as a painter under Charles Hine, he painted Abraham Lincoln while in Washington, D.C. Story would continue his painting career, exhibiting at the National Academy of Design annual before becoming the curator of painting at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art starting in 1889 to 1906. He later became the museum's acting director from 1904 to 1905 and the curator emeritus from 1906 to 1922.

Condition: Painting has possibly light restorative work and cleaning, with a barely visible light white streak from his hair to right shoulder. Very light scratching on Lincoln's beard. The frame has minor abrasions to the top edge on the ornamentation. Lovely display appeal overall. Property from the Cary M. Maguire Estate, Dallas, Texas.
