Description

Abraham Lincoln: Leonard Volk Life Mask and Hand. Leonard Wells Volk is noted for producing a life mask and hands of Lincoln in the Spring of 1860. He also produced busts for Lincoln and Douglas. The Lincoln pieces were replicated beginning in 1880 and have been reproduced until this day, in bronze, plaster and resin. We believe these two pieces were made circa 1890-1910. The single hand measures 6 ½" x 4 ½" with a tan finish. An embossed metal tag inset in the wrist reads: "The Boston Sculpture Company Makers Melrose-Sta. Boston U.S.A." The life mask measures 12" x 8" x 6 ½" and is inscribed on the base "Mask of Lincoln in 1860". It has the maker's tag on the interior and, like the hand, has a suspension loop at the top. We have never seen this particular version before. Both are in excellent condition.
