Description
Abraham Lincoln: Law Office Bookcase. This five-shelf bookcase was once owned and used by the future president in his law office in Springfield, Illinois. Though simplistic in design, it is accented by a thin midnight-blue velvet trim. Dimensions measure approximately 50.5" width x 71" height x 13" depth. Accompanying the bookcase is typed documentation from 1976 by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. It lists information within a portfolio on a few of the different items of the Lincoln Memorial Collection previously held by the Society, titled "An Unusual Opportunity To Acquire The Law Library, Bookcase And A Historic Chair Owned And Used by Abraham Lincoln/ Part of the Lincoln Memorial Collection." Provenance states that the walnut bookcase was originally obtained for the Lincoln Memorial Collection from Mr. William H. Herndon on April 14, 1886, which was later listed for sale in the 1894 catalog by Stanislaus Vincent Henkels. A mounted black and white photograph (assumedly taken by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania) appears at the back of the portfolio, featuring several furniture items from Lincoln's law office (the bookcase included). A financial statement accompanies the portfolio for the transaction of the "Bent Hickory Chair," dated 10-18, for $5,000.Condition: The two doors of the bookcase are missing. Oxidation is present on loose-hanging hinges, and the wood has moderate scratching, wear, and light gouging. The slats and shelves have very minor warping, and a small amount of paper has adhered to the vertical slats on the third shelf of the case. The number "19" has been written in marker on one side near the top edge. A separated piece of wood trim and a loose screw are included.
