Description

Abraham Lincoln: Large Oval Albumen Displayed at the Waltham Watch Factory. O-112, taken by Henry D. Warren in Washington, D.C. on March 6, 1865, considered the last photograph taken of Abraham Lincoln alive. 6.5" x 8.5" [sight], placed within an original period mat and framed to an overall size of 13" x 15". The dust cover paper on the back (present, but incomplete) reads: "This picture is the property of those who now work in this department and is donated by them to those who may follow them in the future. [signed] Ira G. Black, Foreman, Waltham June [1865]. 'Putting' up Department 3rd Story north wing American Watch Factory". This inscription replicates the original caption card from 1865 (included) along with a further note that indicates the picture was given to Gleason Wood, the oldest employee of the Waltham Watch Company, in 1922. The note is signed and dated by Mr. Wood December 25, 1924. The interesting thing about this photo is that the photographer, Henry Warren, had his studio in Waltham, Massachusetts, the location of the watch factory. The employees of the watch factory either acquired it directly from the photographer or received it from him as a gift. Thereafter, it hung in a place of honor in their place of business.
